Therapeutic Interventions

Midway between Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester

The mind likes to learn quickly - for instance many phobias or trauma responses (such as PTSD) are learned very quickly and can last a lifetime  -

- in a fraction of a second something happens and a 'Fight-or-Flight' response is triggered to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, which then repeats itself every time the same (or a similar) trigger is experienced - because it worked once it will work again; as you can imagine, later in life, in these sorts of circumstances every problem was once a solution.

The hypnotherapist uses the state of hypnosis to help the individual learn new and more appropriate responses to these triggers - it is as if over-writing a hard disk with new data - brief therapy has an effect usually within 1-4 sessions and I do not charge for more than 12 sessions for any particular, single, issue.

Feedback will only be given to GPs with the express consent of the client, or if a direct referral is made by the GP.

My professional fees are £50 per hour or £75 per 90 minute session
(Discounts available for Public Sector/Registered Charity workers/volunteers)

Anxieties/ Panic Attacks

These are treated with hypnosis using a mix of desensitisation and modelling interventions, treatment is usually 3 or 4 sessions of 90 minutes duration. I have a particular interest in and understanding of Anxiety Issues which are very common in today's high-speed environment. Where learned behaviour has been established to protect ourselves from a perceived danger to ensure we avoid the situation. Usually by highly uncomfortable reactions/behaviours. (Please see separate page for more information)

Phobias/ Nail Biting etc:

These are easily treated with hypnosis using a mix of desensitisation and modelling interventions, treatment is usually 1 or 2 sessions of 90 minutes each. I have a particular interest in and understanding of dental phobias and panic attacks [also include needles and flying process phobias]. Performance anxiety (that presentation or speech) simple phobias such as spiders and buttons etc all fall into this category (see also pain management below).

Depression:

Usually a 4+ session approach is required for reactive depression, a client should speak to their GP about utilising a hypnotherapeutic approach before booking treatment and make sure that any later reduction of anti-depressants is undertaken with medical consent and supervision. The interventions are based on  new learning based around a client's cognitive processes concentrating on self-talk, self-image and goal-setting.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome):

Usually a 4+ session approach including the teaching of self-hypnosis will bring about significant improvements to this most socially debilitating and distressing set of symptoms. The approach is very much modelled on the well researched and documented 'Manchester Model' developed by Professor Peter Whorwell. Using guided imagery and a sense of warmth over 3+ sessions and teaching the individual self-hypnosis, so they are able to access these techniques themselves; again a client should discuss proposed treatment with their GP first to ensure the diagnosis of IBS. (Please see separate page for more details)

Insomnia:

A two or three 1 hour session approach with tailored suggestions and guided experience, a specific self-hypnosis technique is also taught to the client for them to be able to utilise at will.

Pain Management:

Prior GP consultation by the client is essential with chronic pain management for distinct medical reasons and ethically I would not be able to treat an individual without a GP's agreement. However for specific/future pain management such as dental surgery or a aiding rapid recovery, in advance, from a forthcoming operation  no medical consent is required.

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder):

Hypnotherapy can be a phenomenal tool in significantly reducing or even removing the symptoms of PTSD. There is no use of regressive techniques in this process as quite honestly it is not necessary to make an individual go through the experience of reliving such a trauma in helping them move on from it, rather view it from a safe place with the use of a 'rewind technique' and/or desensitisation techniques. If the triggering event was a single trauma then two 90 minute sessions is often all that is required.

Substance Misuse/ Smoking Cessation/  Weight Management:

Two approaches are available for substance misuse a single long session (especially for Smoking Cessation) or a series of 1 hour sessions on a weekly basis. The interventions are in adjusting self-image and self-perception through guided imagery and modelling with targeted interspersed suggestions. Client motivation is important, with a clear goal  being established  to change old habits and behaviours.

Sports Performance:

Whether it be a matter of regaining confidence after injury, increasing fore-sight, goal setting / achievement or increasing team-playing/awareness or even 'tweaking' your golf swing, hypnosis is an effective tool in helping you achieve your goals whilst making sure you keep that edge over your competition; whatever level you engage in sport at, using guided imagery and modelling will help progress your game.
