Depression and Hypnotherapy

Midway between Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester

There are two general types of depression, reactive and endogenous. The first type, Reactive Depression, where there is a specific event or a set of events that trigger a depressive episode, responds well to hypnotherapeutic interventions as it is generally cognitive in its source, experience and therefore resolution.

The second type, Endogenous Depression, is far more to do with neuroscience, nature/nurture issues and brain chemical functioning and is far more long term, whilst hypnotherapy can help in alleviating some of the experiences of this type it is a far more complex journey and the gains tend to be far less. Stress is very similar in treatment approaches to Reactive Depression and should be considered to be covered here.

Before looking to hypnotherapy an individual should discuss any proposed treatment with their GP, this is for two reasons: firstly to ensure that the depression is reactive, not endogenous; and secondly to ensure that any later reduction of anti-depressants is undertaken with medical supervision.

Treatments are very closely based on the experiences of the individual and looks at cognitive based outcomes; the learning of new, better, thinking patterns based around self-talk, self-image and goal setting - and there is also some gentle 'home-work' to undertake between sessions.

We all talk to ourselves, carry on an internal dialogue, every day throughout the whole day, commenting on what we are doing, how we have done and presuming how others are reacting to us/analysing what is said to us and how it affects us. If our self-talk is negative we can enter a downward spiral of self-negativity which then can spill over into other areas of our lives. It is important therefore to relearn to become one's own best friend; to treat oneself as a good friend that you are kind to and that you can trust.

Self-image is how we perceive ourselves and is reinforced by our self-talk, during depressive episodes our self-image becomes more introverted, less fulfilled and our comfort zones shrink as we withdraw into ourselves - therapeutic interventions look at boosting self-image through modelling, positive self-talk and reframing activities.

Positive Self-Talk, Hypnotherapy for depression

Goal setting is as important part as any of the two above as we require goals to achieve to keep us moving forwards, achieving. It doesn't matter how small these gains/goals are so long as we have them to aim for and so long as we come close to achieving them we set new goals to take the place of the old ones, to keep us moving forwards.

Interventions are also based, from the impact of the above about self-talk, image and goal setting, on Orr's Law of 'What the Thinker thinks, the Prover proves' that depression can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as can coming out of depression and creating a stronger and more resilient self.
